So if you’re into personal development at all, you should have heard of EFT tapping by now. If not, then I’m so happy to be able to introduce you to this new and novel technique! Actually it’s not that new. It’s been around for decades but has gained a lot more popularity within the past 10-15 years. Here’s what it is, it’s a clinically proven mind-body technique that helps you to process and get rid of emotional stress/trauma and sometimes it can even help with physical pain as well. This method has been used on veterans who were suffering from PTSD, and was very helpful in helping them either manage it and in some cases get rid of the condition. There are even published studies mentioning that an hour session of tapping literally had the power to shut off the genes that are implied in major diseases like certain cancers, diabetes, and others.
It’s been known to help but is definitely not limited to the following list:
- -Get rid of anxiety and panic attacks😵
- -Get rid of phobias🕷️
- -Get rid of physical pain🤕
- -Neutralize negative emotions like anger, frustration, sadness, guilt😒😡😩
- -Get rid of symptoms of PTSD
- -Stop ruminating on past events that you can’t change
- -Get over disappointments😣
- -Change the way you feel about (insert whatever is bothering you here)
- -Overcome limiting beliefs, and reprogram your mind for success
The list is probably longer but I’ll cut it at that. It’s a method that involves tapping on specific meridian points of the body while voicing the problem that is currently bothering you. EFT was adapted from TFT (Thought Field Therapy) by Gary Craig. Roger Callahan was the originator of TFT. He was working with a woman who had a phobia of water. It was so bad that she had trouble bathing her own children and herself. He would try a number of things to help her work it out but none of them were working, including exposure therapy. One day while he was having her put her ankles into the water, he asked her how she was feeling and she said she felt nauseous.
Instinctually, he knew that the pressure point right under the eye is related to the stomach and he started tapping on that point. Miraculously her phobia went away and she was able to go in water and be around water with no problems.
For myself, when I stumbled upon EFT I tried out a tapping routine I saw on youtube. I came across it because a book I read suggested it. I rolled my eyes and thought well, let’s see what this is about. It was strange, and the method looked strange but I kept an open mind and as I went through it, I started to cry. I was fine like 5 seconds ago but it’s like an emotional release was happening for me and I was able to just let whatever I was holding to get out. From that point on I was sold and knew I needed to learn it and find out more. EFT helped me with a number of different things ranging from anger issues to extreme grief over the loss of loved ones and anything in between. It’s an amazing process and one that I use heavily with my clients.
It’s very effective at helping you to neutralize something that carries an emotional intensity for you. It does this because it calms down your nervous system, in particular the amygdala, which is the part of the brain that is responsible for your stress response of “fight or flight.” In the picture below are all the points used in tapping.
